Have you ever looked at something in your home a million times and wondered how to update it?! That’s how I have felt about my corner fireplace since I moved in. Honestly, it was beautiful before I changed it, it just wasn’t quite my style. Although there are still a couple changes to be made <*cough tile cough*>, I think that this is a good start. I can’t wait to show you how to build your own Wooden Mantel!

Here’s the before picture of our mantel ^^. Not too bad right?! But I’ve added so many rustic touches too my home, like this rustic pendant light and this rustic industrial side table, that the mantel just didn’t seem to fit. So I decided to throw some rustic in and build my own wooden mantel.
The whole mantel was built in a couple of evenings and was SO easy! Just a few boards and a Kreg Pocket Jig and you’re done! lol. Ok…. well it might be a bit more complicated, but if you have ever built anything (or know someone who can!), then you can build this :)
You can find the FREE plans for this project here at BuildSomething.com. Build Something is the site by Kreg full of AMAZING DIY build plans. You will get lost in great project plans as soon as you pop over.
We actually used a gloss varnish on it the first time, which gives it that sheen. I think I may pop it back into the garage for a night or two to re-varnish it with a matte finish varnish. The gloss shows off the beautiful grain of the wood, but the matte finish is a bit more rustic. What would you do?!
I couldn’t be happier with how the mantel build came together! Perfect addition to our corner fireplace. These plans are easily modified for a flat fireplace if you are looking to spruce up a mantel against a wall too.
Let me know what you think of our transformation! Don’t forget to pop over to Build Something to see how we built this beauty!

I would go with the more rustic sheen. The shiny sheen gives a more modern vibe. How did you change the color on the fireplace vents? Spray paint?

Totally agree with you! Can't believe you noticed the fireplace colour, haha. Yes, we spray painted them - took 2 minutes and makes a big difference!
