Love modern home decor? These DIY candle holders made with copper pipe add a simplistic, modern touch. Beautiful modern home decor has never been so easy!
It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, I am always decorating with candles. They’re the perfect addition to any coffee table or vignette! But the modern ones I find online or in stores are always quite expensive. So, I grabbed some white candlesticks, and headed to the hardware store to try my hand at making a DIY candle holder.

If you’ve never worked with copper pipe before, you’ll be hooked after you try this project, I promise! It’s easy to learn and once you know how to cut and glue copper, it opens a whole ton of DIY possibilities!
Materials needed for this candle holder:
- 1/2″ copper pipe (2″ x 12 pieces)
- 4 1/2″ copper tee fittings
- Acetone
- Flat black spray paint
- 4 1/2″ 90 degree elbow fittings
- 2 part epoxy (glue)
- Ratcheting pipe cutter
- 4 1/2″ to 3/4″ copper pipe reducers
How to Make Your Own Modern Candle Holders:
Start by making sure all of your pricing and product stickers are removed. I used a utility knife to scrape them off.
Next, I used acetone to clean off any remaining glue from the stickers, and to make sure the pipe was clean so that my spray paint would adhere later.
Next, I laid out my copper elbows and tees so that I knew where they would sit for my candle holder.
I wanted to cut 2″ pieces of copper pipe to fit between the joints of the elbows and the tees.
Mark two inches with a permanent marker on your copper pipe and then use a ratcheting pipe cutter to cut at that mark. Repeat this 11 more times so that you have 12 2″ pieces of pipe.
Once the pipe is all cut, I used a 2 part epoxy to glue the pipe together. This stuff dries quick and is very strong! It’s my favourite stuff to use with my copper pipe DIYs.
Final Steps
I attached everything just as the example in the picture below and I glued all of the bottom pieces first, making sure that the tees were facing upwards. Then, I attached two inch pipes upwards, and the reducers on the top of the pipe. The reducer changes the pipe to a 3/4″, which is the exact width of most candle sticks!
Finally, I spray painted the whole piece with my favourite flat black spray paint!
What do you think of the finished product?! I wish I had some beautiful built-in open shelves to display this DIY candle holder on… future project? For now, I’ll just have to show it off on the coffee table.
