One Room Challenge {Week Five} – Adding Character to a Small Space

Welcome back! If you’re stopping by for the first time, you’re catching me in the middle of a six-week long Master Bedroom Closet renovation.  I’m participating in the One Room Challenge hosted by Calling it Home (once again!), and completely re-doing a space in a mere six weeks (start here if you’re new). Last week, I shared about some of the fun decisions that you get to make halfway through a renovation. This week, I wanted to show you that adding character to a small space doesn’t have to be difficult!

Just as a reminder, this is our design plan for my dream closet.  Last week we started the project and I didn’t realize just how much work it was going to be. Last week, I left you with a boring blank slate of a closet (^^ see above).

This week…

…. amazing things have happened!

I have added SO much beauty and personality to the space by adding a few new colours and textures!

Last week I asked for opinions on which colour to paint a feature wall, or if I should even paint one! Well, I went for it! The Beauti-Tone paint line from Home Hardware has a new colour of the year called “You Look Mauve-lous”, and I couldn’t help but put this beautiful colour up on my wall! Just wait until you see the final reveal photos – you’ll be swooning! I LOVE the pop of colour and the visual interest it adds to the small space.

How else am I adding character? Texture!!! I could’ve continued the hardwood flooring into the closet, but I wanted the floors and the ceilings to pop out, since the cabinets are just plain white wardrobes. Tile adds a new element to the space. It’s the perfect way to add a dark colour, because the colour will be minimal, but still impactful, and partially covered by a rug.

We used our Ryobi Tabletop Tile Saw to cut the tile and it worked perfectly! The entire space was cut and laid out in no time.

We’ve started cutting this charcoal tile from Home Depot and dry-fitting it in the space. I’m SO happy with the colour!

Then came the ceiling. We used this beautiful Reclaimed Weathered Wood in White by Stikwood to create a gorgeous rustic wood ceiling – perfect addition to my barn door :) It’s real wood my friends. Real weathered wood on the ceiling. I couldn’t be happier with the look!

Other than that, I’ve bought a few accessories, like hangers, hooks, and crates. I’ve never seen anyone use crates like these ones below in a closet – but I think they could be the perfect addition! We’ll see once the closet is ready to fill!

We are also busy at work in the garage – painting trim, staining my gorgeous barn door, and painting my pretty new-to-me mirror from last week :)

Busy as usual! What’s that? Seven more nights and a whole TON of work left to do?! Eek!

• Clean out closet (FULL purge!)
• Complete demo
• Reframe closet (& shower!)
• Cut/build new door frame for barn door
• Move electrical, vents, and water
• A BILLION OTHER THINGS THAT WE DIDN’T PLAN ON
• Drywall up
• Scrape popcorn ceiling
• Paint walls and ceiling
• Trim closet and doorways
• Install sliding barn door
• Stain sliding barn door
• Install new tile flooring
• Install Weathered Wood Ceiling Panels
• Install new wardrobes
• Buy a new rug
• Build DIY closet lighting
• DIY a closet mirror
• DIY Drawer Pulls
• Buy closet accessories

I’m looking at this list thinking that there is still a LOT of work to do and not a lot of time… really hoping I can get it all done in the final week! Wish me Luck!
