Welcome to another month of the #makeit challenge!
Last month a few of us joined together to make a great patriotic craft project (see my Canada Day Centerpiece). This month we were challenged to make a Beach themed craft. This beach themed DIY Home Sweet Home Sign will be perfect for decorating your home this summer!
Here’s what you need to make it:
5ft of 1×4’s (wood)
Mitre Saw
Cricut Explore Air 2
Vinyl
Chalk Paint (I used Americana Decor – green, blue, yellow, & white)
Rope
I started by designing my sign on the Cricut Explore Air 2. I found an image of my home province, Alberta. and then found a font I liked to write “Home Sweet Home” on the sign, and sized it fit the province pic.
You must make sure to weld the text images so that the words keep the same spacing that you designed in the design space. Print all the words on one vinyl sheet….
…then print the province (or state) on another vinyl sheet. Mine was more than 12 inches long, so I had to use my 12 x 24″ mat to cut it out.
Now that you have the vinyl cut. time to get to the woodwork!
I started by cutting my 1 x 4’s, into 12″ sections using the mitre saw.
Next, I painted each of the wood slices individually, and then attached the backs together using some spare wood I had lying around. I attached the wood backing with wood glue, and a staple gun.
Next, I flipped the project over (right-side up), and placed my vinyl on top.
Then, using some painters tape, and an X-Acto knife, I created a small border around my province cut-out that I could paint after. I painted within the border with my white chalk paint.
When that was dry, I removed the vinyl and painters tape, and then added the vinyl for the “Home Sweet Home” wording and painted those letters. Hint: If you use a bit of heat, it will help adhere the vinyl even better!
Does anything say beach like rustic rope? I definitely had to add that! I drilled two thick holes into the top so that I could add some rope for hanging my beautiful beachy artwork.
I was hoping to make something that felt beachy, but also that I could keep up on display any time. So I chose some beachy paint colours, but a very neutral saying :) So proud of how this sign turned out! LOVE my province!

I am pretty nervous while using a saw, did you take up some sort of training to use it?

My husband taught me everything he knows! I definitely would recommend taking some training before you try a saw though. There are a lot of little things to be aware of for your safety when using new equipment!
